Common Canon New F-1 faults
Canon New F-1 meter needle not moving
Because the meter cell sits in the finder rather than the body, a dead needle can mean a flat or corroded battery, dirty finder contacts, or a failed cell in the finder itself. Worth trying a fresh 6 V cell first. If the needle still won't move, the fault is most likely in the finder's wiring or CdS cell rather than the body electronics.
Canon New F-1 shutter speeds inaccurate at 1/1000 and 1/2000
The New F-1's shutter is mechanically driven with some speeds electronically governed, and after decades the timing at the top speeds is usually the first thing to drift, showing as thin or uneven exposure on faster shots while slower speeds still look fine. It points to wear or gumming in the shutter's escapement rather than anything electrical, and is common on well used bodies.
Canon New F-1 mirror sticking up or slow to return
A mirror that hangs up after firing, or comes down slowly, usually means the mirror damping foam or the mirror box's return mechanism has aged and gone gummy. It's a mechanical wear fault rather than an electrical one, and gets more noticeable in cold weather. Worth checking the mirror lock-up lever isn't accidentally engaged before assuming a fault.
Canon New F-1 AE finder not giving correct exposure
Because auto exposure runs through the accessory AE finder rather than the body, wrong or erratic exposure with that finder fitted usually traces back to its own electronics or its contact pins to the body, not the shutter. Reseating the finder and checking the battery is the only no-tools step; persistent faults point to the finder unit.
Canon New F-1 shutter fires but frame is blank or badly overlapped
This is normally a film transport or shutter curtain timing fault rather than anything to do with metering. Confirm the film is winding on and the rewind knob turns with resistance as you advance, since a snapped leader or loose spool can mimic the same symptom. If transport is sound, the shutter curtains are the likely cause.
