Excellent coverageThe Leica Leicaflex, introduced in 1964, was Leitz's first SLR: a fully mechanical camera with a cloth focal-plane shutter that has no electronics in its exposure path at all. Metering comes from an uncoupled external CdS cell on the front of the prism housing, giving a match-needle reading in the viewfinder rather than driving the aperture automatically, a generation before the through-lens metering of the later SL and SL2.

Common Leica Leicaflex faults
Leica Leicaflex meter needle won't move or reads wrong
The meter runs off an external CdS cell on the prism housing rather than through the lens, so a dead or sluggish needle usually points to that cell drifting with age or its wiring corroding, not the shutter. A flat or wrong battery gives the same symptom. Worth trying a fresh battery seated properly before assuming the cell itself has failed.
Leica Leicaflex shutter speeds sound uneven
This is a fully mechanical horizontal cloth shutter, so uneven or wrong-sounding speeds almost always mean the escapement has old hardened lubricant or worn bearings rather than anything electrical. Slower speeds are usually first to drag or hang open. It is a common mechanical ageing fault on cameras this old and points to the timing train needing attention rather than the meter or electronics.
Leica Leicaflex viewfinder looks dim or hazy
A dim or foggy viewfinder on a camera this age is usually the prism silvering deteriorating or haze forming on the internal optics, sometimes worsened by perished mirror foam shedding debris nearby. It does not touch the shutter or the meter and exposures are unaffected, it just makes composing and manual focusing harder to judge.
Leica Leicaflex wind lever is stiff or won't advance
A stiff or jammed wind lever points to the film advance gear train or the linkage that cocks the shutter, not to exposure itself. Old hardened grease is the usual cause on a camera this age, though a hard jam can mean something is genuinely binding. Check the rewind knob still turns freely first, since a finished roll left loaded will also stop the lever dead.
Leica Leicaflex mirror stays up after the shutter fires
A mirror that fails to return after firing points to the mirror return mechanism or its linkage into the shutter cycle, a spring-and-pivot assembly that weakens or gums up over time. It leaves the viewfinder blacked out until cleared. On a camera this old it is a mechanical wear fault rather than anything to do with the meter or electronics, and usually needs the body open to put right.
