Minox 35 GL repair & common faults

Exposure is fully automatic, set by a CdS cell that drives an electromagnetic leaf shutter rather than a conventional spring escapement, so the camera's health comes down to its battery, its meter circuit and two small shutter magnets. Faults on this model tend to trace back to one of those three.

Common Minox 35 GL faults
Minox 35 GL shutter won't fire
The 35 GL's shutter is held and released by a pair of electromagnets rather than a spring, so it needs power the instant the release is pressed. A dead or weak battery is the usual cause, corroded battery tube contacts the next, and old hardened grease on the blades themselves is common after this many years. Worth trying a fresh cell first.
Minox 35 GL exposures come out too dark or too light
Exposure is set entirely by a CdS cell feeding the metering circuit, which also times the electromagnetic shutter rather than a mechanical governor. Frames that are consistently over or under exposed point to a tired CdS cell, drifted values on the meter board, or a battery below the voltage the circuit expects. Confirm the battery is fresh and properly seated first.
Minox 35 GL battery check button does nothing
Pressing the battery check should move the meter needle, fed by the same circuit that powers the shutter magnets. No response usually means the cell is flat or has lost contact, though the check circuit itself can also be at fault rather than the battery. Try a known fresh PX27 equivalent before assuming anything worse.
Minox 35 GL front cover won't open or close properly
The sliding front cover doubles as the camera's on/off switch and lens guard, riding on a pair of hinge arms and catch springs. A cover that sticks, binds halfway, or won't latch shut points to wear or stiffening in those hinges and springs, a mechanical wear point rather than anything in the metering electronics.
Minox 35 GL frame counter doesn't advance or reset
The frame counter sits behind its own window and is driven off the film advance gearing, separate from the shutter and meter circuits. A number that sticks, skips, or fails to return to zero when the back is opened points to wear or a slipped part in that small drive train, and doesn't by itself mean exposures are affected.
Minox 35 GL aperture blades sticky or slow
The auto-exposure system sets the lens aperture by driving thin blades that should snap cleanly on each shot. Sluggish, hesitant, or stuck blades are almost always old lubricant that has migrated onto them, rather than a fault in the electronics that command them, and it's a common age-related issue on a camera this small.
