Olympus OM-1 repair & common faults

The Olympus OM-1 (1972 to 1979) was the first genuinely compact full-frame 35mm SLR, built around a horizontal cloth-curtain shutter and semi-automatic CdS metering that relies on a mercury cell no longer made. Its speed-control mechanism and mirror damping are both unusually concentrated at the base of the body, which is where most of its age-related faults now originate.

Common Olympus OM-1 faults

Olympus OM-1 meter reads inaccurate exposure

The OM-1's meter was calibrated for a 1.35V mercury cell that has not been made for decades, so most cameras now run on a 1.5V equivalent that reads consistently high, often by around half a stop. If your meter has always erred toward overexposure, checking which cell is fitted is worth doing before assuming a fault. A meter that is erratic rather than consistently off points to a different problem.

Olympus OM-1 meter needle won't move

A needle that stays flat regardless of light usually comes down to a dead cell or a dirty contact, worth ruling out with a fresh cell first. If a known-good battery still gives nothing, the fault runs deeper: a broken cord in the coupling that links the shutter-speed ring to the galvanometer, a failed switch, or a CdS cell finally worn out after decades of service.

Olympus OM-1 mirror stuck up

The OM-1 was the first 35mm SLR fitted with an air-damping piston on its mirror, a small shock absorber that slows the return stroke and cuts noise and vibration. Over the decades the grease in that cylinder thickens, and a mirror that hangs up or returns sluggishly is usually the piston dragging, not a broken spring or linkage. It is a mechanical fault inside the mirror cage, not a battery or switch issue.

Olympus OM-1 light leaks on negatives

The OM-1 uses rubberised-cloth curtains that travel horizontally across the frame, and after fifty years that rubber coating dries, cracks and eventually pinholes, letting light onto the film in streaks or fogged patches. It shows up most on bright days and toward the edges of the frame where the curtain overlaps. This is wear rather than a one-off knock, so it tends to get worse rather than come and go.

Olympus OM-1 viewfinder dim or hazy

A viewfinder that has gone dim, patchy or shows dark blotches at the edges usually means the prism foam has broken down and started to corrode the silvering underneath, a common fate for cameras of this age. It sits in the prism housing rather than the lens or focusing screen, and does not affect the exposure the film actually receives.

Olympus OM-1 slow shutter speeds sticking

The OM-1 keeps its entire speed-control mechanism at the bottom of the camera rather than splitting it top and base like most SLRs of its day. Old lubricant in that stack hardens over time, and it is usually the slow speeds, a second and below, that drag or hang first as the escapement fights thickened grease. Speeds that sound uneven rather than a steady progression point to this rather than a curtain problem.
