Common Olympus XA1 faults
Olympus XA1 photos come out dark or underexposed
This points to the selenium cell behind the meter window rather than anything mechanical. Selenium weakens with decades of light exposure, and because this camera sets exposure without a battery there is nothing to compensate as the cell fades, so pictures drift progressively darker while winding and firing feel completely normal. It is this model's best-known age fault.
Olympus XA1 shutter feels slow or hangs before firing
The shutter is a small mechanical leaf unit rather than an electronic one, so old hardened lubricant inside it is the usual explanation for sluggish blades, a hesitation before the shutter fires, or speeds that sound noticeably slower than they should. It tends to worsen in cold weather. Confirm the film advance lever has been wound fully home first, a half-wound stroke can look like the same symptom.
Olympus XA1 negatives are fogged or streaked with light
This is almost always the foam seal around the clamshell door and its hinge, which turns sticky and then crumbles away with age until it stops blocking light. Because the leak lets light creep in steadily during ordinary handling rather than at one moment in the exposure, it tends to show along the edges of every frame on a roll rather than just a few.
Olympus XA1 flash won't fire
The clip-on flash carries its own battery separate from the body, and the camera itself needs no battery at all to set exposure, so this fault sits entirely within the flash unit. Worth checking that battery is fresh and making good contact before assuming anything worse. If a new one still leaves the flash dead, the fault is in the flash's own circuit or its contacts rather than the camera.
Olympus XA1 meter needle won't move in the viewfinder
A needle that stays completely still, rather than one that just reads weak or sluggish, points more to a mechanical snag in the linkage between the selenium cell and the needle than to a faded cell, which usually still twitches with changes in light. Dirt or old hardened grease in that linkage is the common explanation on a camera this age, and it needs the meter opened to confirm.
