Excellent coverageThe XA2 is Olympus's fully automatic clamshell compact from 1980, a simplified sibling to the rangefinder-focusing original XA. It swaps the rangefinder for scale zone focusing and hands exposure entirely to an electronic shutter driven by a CdS meter, so its faults trace almost always to that shutter and metering circuit, the electromagnet that fires it, or the battery contacts feeding the lot.

Common Olympus XA2 faults
Olympus XA2 shutter won't fire
The XA2's shutter is triggered electromagnetically rather than by a spring release, so nothing happens if the firing circuit is broken anywhere along its length: the battery contacts, the release button contact, or the magnet and its mating contacts that actually pull the blades open. A fresh pair of cells is worth trying first, but a silent shutter beyond that points to a break inside the circuit.
Olympus XA2 exposures coming out too dark or too light
There is no manual override on this camera, the CdS cell and its amplifier set exposure on every frame. Consistently over or underexposed results usually mean the cell has weakened or the metering circuit has drifted with age, not a photographer error. Try a fresh battery first, since a tired cell can skew the reading before any component inside is actually at fault.
Olympus XA2 shutter blades sticking or sluggish
The shutter itself is a small pair of electromagnetically driven blades, and old lubricant creeping onto them from nearby is a known age fault, making them slow to open and close. The result is overexposed or streaky frames, most visible at the faster end of the range. This is inside the shutter unit and not something visible or reachable from outside the body.
Olympus XA2 self-timer not working
The self-timer runs off its own small lever, shaft and click mechanism, separate from the main shutter circuit, so a timer that won't set, won't run down, or fires instantly usually means wear or a dislodged part in that assembly rather than anything wrong with the shutter itself. It has no bearing on exposure when the timer isn't in use.
Olympus XA2 photos have light leaks or fogging
Foam and felt light seals line the film door and hinge to keep the cassette chamber dark, and on a camera this age they have almost always perished, whether or not the camera looks cared for. Once they compress or crumble, stray light reaches the film edges as fogging or streaks, usually worse in bright conditions and worst nearest the hinge.
