Ricoh GR1V LCD screen has faded or missing segments

This is the GR1v's best known weak point: the top information panel, showing frame count, exposure and battery state, develops patchy or missing segments as the display ages. It's a fault in the LCD itself, not the exposure or metering circuitry behind it, so the camera can go on shooting correctly even when the readout is hard to trust.

Ricoh GR1V won't power on when the lens cover slides open

Sliding the cover open should wake the camera, so worn battery contacts or genuinely flat CR2 cells are the first suspects, worth swapping before anything else. Beyond that, the fault usually sits in the switch the cover trips or the power circuit it feeds, both electronic rather than mechanical, and generally straightforward to isolate on the bench.

Ricoh GR1V autofocus hunts or won't lock

The GR1v's autofocus is a passive system reading contrast through a small window beside the lens, and hunting or refusing to lock usually means that window is dirty, or the AF sensor or motor driving the lens is degrading. Low light and low contrast subjects always make it worse, so test in good, even light before assuming a fault.

Ricoh GR1V shutter won't fire

A dead shutter on this camera nearly always points to the electronics rather than a jammed mechanism, since the shutter is triggered and timed electronically. Flat or corroded CR2 cells are the first thing to rule out. If fresh batteries make no difference, the fault is most likely in the release circuit or the shutter unit itself.

Ricoh GR1V film won't advance or rewind

Film transport on the GR1v is fully motorised, so a stall on advance or rewind points to the drive motor, its gearing, or the sensor that tracks film movement, rather than anything the user can free by hand. Confirm the film cassette is seated properly and the door is shut firmly, since a poor seal is occasionally mistaken for a transport fault.

Ricoh GR1V frames come out under or overexposed

Consistent under or overexposure on an aperture-priority compact like this usually means the metering cell or the aperture blades themselves, since the aperture is set electronically rather than by hand. Ageing blades can stick slightly at small apertures, skewing exposure only in some conditions. Fresh batteries rule out a simple power cause before anything else is worth suspecting.
