Common Contax 645 faults
Contax 645 top LCD blank or fading
The top status panel on these cameras is known to fade, patch, or drop out over time regardless of battery condition. It is a display fault, not a metering or shutter fault, so the camera can often still expose correctly even when you cannot read the settings. Worth confirming the battery is fresh first, but a persistent patchy or dead display usually points to the panel itself.
Contax 645 shutter won't fire
A dead shutter on this body is almost always electrical rather than a jammed curtain, since firing is triggered and timed electronically. Corroded or dirty battery contacts are a common and checkable cause, so worth trying a fresh 2CR5 and reseating it. If that doesn't help, the fault sits somewhere in the shutter's control circuit or the release electronics and is worth a proper look.
Contax 645 film back not detected or back error
The interchangeable back communicates with the body through a set of electrical contacts, and a back that won't seat, won't fire, or throws an error is usually a contact problem rather than a broken back. Worth checking the back is fully latched and the contact points look clean. Persistent errors across more than one back point to the body side of that connection.
Contax 645 autofocus not working or hunting
Autofocus on this system relies on a motor and coupling in the lens driven by signals from the body, and hunting, slow focus or no focus at all can originate on either side. Low light and low contrast subjects will always slow it down, so it is worth testing in good light first. Consistent failure regardless of light or lens usually means wear in the drive coupling.
Contax 645 aperture error or lens not communicating
Aperture is set electronically through contacts between lens and body rather than a mechanical ring click, so an aperture error, blank reading, or exposure that ignores the set value points to that contact interface rather than the lens glass. Cleaning obvious dirt from the visible contacts is the one thing worth checking yourself. A fault that follows the lens between bodies narrows it to the lens side.
