Excellent coverageThe Contax G2 is a 1996 titanium-bodied autofocus rangefinder built around Zeiss T* lenses on a dedicated bayonet mount, sold as the serious photographer's alternative to a rangefinder Leica. Everything on it is motor-driven and electronically controlled, from focus and film transport to its vertical metal shutter, so most of its faults are electromechanical wear rather than anything mechanical in the classic sense. It runs entirely on two CR2 batteries and will not operate at all without them.

Common Contax G2 faults
Contax G2 won't autofocus
The G2's autofocus relies on a motorised sensor assembly that hunts or gives up entirely as its internals age, often producing a beep with no lock rather than a lens shift. It can appear intermittently before failing outright. Confirm the front sensor window is clean and unobstructed before assuming it's mechanical, since a film of dirt or grease produces the same symptom.
Contax G2 shutter capping at high speeds
Frames shot at faster shutter speeds show uneven density, often a darker band across part of the image, because the two curtains of the vertical metal shutter are no longer travelling in the timing relationship they were built to. It's an electromechanical wear fault rather than something a user setting causes, and it tends to worsen gradually rather than appear overnight.
Contax G2 top LCD panel faded or blank
The exposure and frame counter display on the top plate uses a liquid crystal panel that clouds, fades or drops segments with age, sometimes leaving the camera looking dead when it's actually still metering and firing normally. Reseating fresh batteries occasionally restores a dim display, but a genuinely blank or patchy panel points to the panel or its connection wearing out.
Contax G2 film advance or rewind not working
Film transport on the G2 is fully motorised, so a camera that won't advance, rewind or load is usually telling you its drive motor, gear train or film-movement sensors have failed rather than anything the user is doing wrong. Check the battery compartment for fresh, correctly seated cells first, since low power mimics a transport fault convincingly.
Contax G2 dead or intermittent power
A camera that won't wake, meter or fire at all often comes down to corrosion or weak spring tension at the battery contacts rather than the electronics behind them, especially after long storage with cells left inside. Removing and refitting fresh batteries, checked for correct orientation, rules out the simplest cause before anything inside is suspected.
Contax G2 mode dial or buttons unresponsive
The exposure mode dial and rear buttons read out electronically rather than mechanically, so worn contacts beneath the dial or a failing flex connection can make the camera ignore mode changes or stick on one setting. It behaves as though the electronics have failed even when the fault is only in the switch contacts. There is no user-side setting that fixes this.
