Excellent coverageThe Pentax 6x7 is a medium format SLR from the late 1960s, built to give 6x7cm negatives with the handling of a scaled-up 35mm reflex. The body itself is fully mechanical and needs no battery to fire, metering only comes into play if the optional CdS prism finder is fitted in place of the plain finder. The single biggest factor in how one behaves day to day is the sheer mass of that mirror slapping over on every exposure.

Common Pentax 6X7 faults
Pentax 6x7 blurred or soft images at slower shutter speeds
This body carries one of the largest mirrors of any SLR, and the slap transmits real vibration into the camera on every exposure, worst around a quarter to a fifteenth of a second on a tripod. It's inherent to the design rather than a fault by itself, but a mirror lock lever that isn't holding, or isn't in use, makes it worse. Check the lever is engaging before the shot.
Pentax 6x7 uneven exposure across the frame at high speeds
At the top speeds the two shutter curtains must cross the frame in close sequence. If their timing has drifted with age, one starts catching the other, showing as a dark band at one edge of the frame. It only appears at faster speeds and points to the shutter mechanism itself, not the meter or lens. Worth checking it repeats across more than one frame before assuming a camera fault.
Pentax 6x7 mirror stuck up, viewfinder black
If the mirror stays up after firing and the finder goes black, the return mechanism has bound rather than the shutter itself failing. On a camera this size that's usually old lubricant gone thick and slow rather than a broken part, though the mirror lock lever left engaged by mistake will do the exact same thing. Check the lock lever position before assuming the mechanism has actually failed.
Pentax 6x7 light meter not reading
The body itself has no electronics, metering only exists if a CdS metered prism is fitted, and that's a separate finder with its own small battery. A dead or flat needle usually means the cell, its wiring, or the battery contacts rather than anything mechanical elsewhere in the camera. Try a fresh battery first, CdS cells also drift low with decades of use and eventually need attention beyond that.
Pentax 6x7 slow shutter speeds sound sluggish or hang
The slow-speed escapement is a small mechanical timer, and it's usually the first thing to suffer if a camera has sat unused for years, old lubricant thickens and drags the governor rather than letting it run freely. The result is the slower speeds running noticeably long, or the shutter hanging open briefly. It's a mechanical timing issue rather than anything the meter or battery affects.
