Excellent coverageThe Praktica MTL5 is an East German mechanical SLR built by VEB Pentacon Dresden in the early 1980s, using the M42 screw thread mount fitted across the whole Praktica L and MTL range. It runs a fully mechanical, spring and escapement driven shutter with a separate CdS metering circuit, so a fault in one system rarely affects the other.

Praktica MTL5 slow shutter speeds sticking
A shutter that drags or hangs on 1 second and 1/30 usually means the escapement train that times the slow speeds has old lubricant gumming its gears, a common fault on this era of mechanical Pentacon shutter. Faster speeds often still sound fine because they run mostly on spring tension rather than the escapement. Firing the shutter empty at the slow settings will show the hesitation clearly.
Praktica MTL5 meter needle not moving
If the viewfinder needle sits dead regardless of light, the fault is usually the CdS cell, its wiring, or the battery contacts rather than the shutter, since metering and shutter release are separate on this body. A fresh 1.5 volt cell seated the right way round is worth trying first. If the needle still won't respond, the metering circuit itself needs looking at.
Praktica MTL5 wind lever jammed
A wind lever that binds partway, or a shutter that won't release at all, usually points to the wind gear train rather than the shutter curtains, since advancing the film and cocking the shutter share the same gearing on this body. It is common after long storage, once old grease has stiffened. Confirming the rewind knob turns freely with the back open at least rules out a jammed roll of film.
Praktica MTL5 mirror stuck up
A mirror that stays up after the shutter fires, or slaps back slowly, points to the mirror gear train and its return springs rather than the shutter itself. Dried grease or a weakened spring in that linkage is the usual cause on a camera this age. It is a mechanical fault inside the mirror box, not something a battery change or a clean of the contacts will fix.
Praktica MTL5 light leaks on negatives
Even bands of extra exposure at the frame edges, especially in bright conditions, usually come from the fabric curtains and the foam seals around the film door perishing with age, rather than any fault in the metering or wind train. This is common on any mechanical camera from this period that has gone unserviced. It will not stop the camera firing correctly, only affect what lands on the film.
