Pentax MZ S LCD screen blank or missing segments
The top panel and viewfinder displays share their electronics with metering and exposure control, so blank patches or missing segments usually point to the display driver rather than a fault in the meter itself. It is a known weak point on ageing examples of this camera. Check the battery contacts and door are seating properly before assuming the display has failed outright.
Pentax MZ S shutter won't fire
A dead shutter here usually traces back to the electronic release chain rather than the blades themselves, since firing and timing are both handled electronically with no mechanical backup. Corroded battery contacts or cells sitting below the electronics' working voltage are the most common non-mechanical cause. Beyond that it points to the shutter magnet or control circuit. Check the batteries are fresh first.
Pentax MZ S meter reading erratic or inconsistent
A meter that jumps around or disagrees with known light points at the TTL cell or its wiring rather than handling, since exposure on this body is entirely electronic. A marginal battery can produce the same symptom without ever throwing a low-battery warning. Try a fresh pair of cells first, since if the fault persists the meter circuit itself needs proper attention.

If the viewfinder image doesn't darken as you stop down, or exposures come out consistently off, the aperture actuating lever or its linkage to the lens is the usual suspect rather than the lens itself. This is a mechanical fault inside the body and shows up regardless of which lens is fitted. Confirm the same behaviour happens across more than one lens before assuming it's the body.
Pentax MZ S battery drain or dead on fresh batteries
This body is demanding on its two CR2 cells because metering, autofocus, both displays and the shutter all run electronically with nothing mechanical to fall back on. Rapid drain more often comes down to contact corrosion in the battery chamber than to the cells themselves. Check the contacts are clean and bright before condemning a fresh set of batteries.
